My Favourite Yet!

I'm really excited about the new pieces I've just finished drafting.  For this bra, I was inspired by the amazing lines in this 1930's strapless bra from the Victoria and Albert Museum. It's hard to believe this piece is nearly 80 years old.  It looks so modern in its construction.  I wanted to draft something similar, with the mesh panels and sweeping lines, but in a less structured style, and with straps.  This is what I came up with:

The cup is lined in soft beige lining, and the centre panel and upper left panel are self lined in satin. I bound the upper edge in bias binding, eased on with elastic to help give it stretch and support.  The bottom band is trimmed with plush elastic. It's a very comfortable, supportive bra for something so light weight and with no wires or padding!

My dress form doesn't quite "fill out" the cups the way a real body does.  It really creates a nice shape.  I am so happy with how this pattern turned out.  It needs just a few more tweaks and will be ready to go! I sewed my sample in a stretch polyester satin and stretch lace.  The nice thing about these fabrics is they are easy to wash and care for... but it could be made in nearly any fabric imaginable! I think it would look cute in a floral.  What do you think?

    1. Thanks Salma! I am still debating on my patterns - and if I were to do it, would i do a printed pattern or PDF? :) I am glad to know there is interest.

  3. This is absolutely lovely! Question, are you going to be offering this in your shop? And do you think it can be "strengthened" to hold up a 38DDD?

    1. Hi Ladykatza! the lower cup could be interlined, perhaps some boning added for support along the sides. I am a 32DD and find this very comfortable for myself. The satin and the lining have a slight stretch to it.

  6. This is stunning Sarah, I would love one of these! I wonder though if it would provide support for larger 'assets', or do you think it's more suited to smaller ones?

    1. I'm a 32DD and this is a very comfortable bra for me. I think any larger than that, you would want to add some boning along the side to help keep the cup "up" and maybe an interlining in the lower cup. I'm going to try my hand at a more structured bra soon!

  8. This is so beautiful! I'm just getting into sewing lingerie and loungewear and this is one of the best peices I've seen!

I have a 34B but I love the comfy non-underwire bras. This is a very beautiful design! I love the sheer pieces. Cute and subtly sexy. (: I would LOVE a pattern for this, pdf OR paper. PDF would be nice, as it could be printed at home for less but paper would also be wonderful.

  9. I have some very 30's peachy satin in my stash that would be just perfect for this. This is a beautiful brassiere and I would definitely be interested. What kind of a shape does it give, i.e. pointy or not so much so?
